Sanitation First has so far built over 3000 individual household EcoSan toilets. These toilets enable households to practice safe sanitation in the comfort of their own houses and also retrieve the compost as a rich soil fertilizer for their crops and flowering plants.

Sanitation First firmly believes that access to adequate and clean sanitation and an opportunity to practice safe menstrual hygiene are key enhancers for keeping girls in school. In many schools, there is inadequate, poorly maintained or inaccessible toilets, which adversely affect the health and hygiene of children. So far Sanitation First has built ecosan sanitary blocks in over a hundred schools catering to more than 65,000 student beneficiaries annually. The school sanitary blocks have adequate urinals and toilets based on the WHO and UNICEF guidelines as well as separate change rooms with incinerators to practice safe menstrual hygiene. Students act as catalysts in ensuring their families adapt toilet use and behavioral change.
GroEdu(School EcoSan)

Sanitation First has developed the unique container based semi-permanent GroSan toilets for resource constrained, densely populated urban slums. This innovation has been put to use since 2010 and has yielded high impact in areas where there is lack of space to build individual household toilets, limited infrastructure by way of drainage or water supply and poor access to free public toilets. The CBS operates under full compliance of the WHO Sanitation Safety plans and the provisions of the Manual Scavenging Act 2013. This innovation was recently awarded the third place in the Swachh-o-vation contest, held by the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, Government of India along with WSSCC.

In communities and schools where resource recovery is either not logistically or programmatically required and/or feasible, Sanitation First provides toilets that are based upon Dewats systems. Dewats systems are low cost, effective treatment plants that use natural, biological and physical processes for effective waste management. The waste passes through the settler, anaerobic baffled reactor and fixed bed anaerobic filter till it reaches a planted Gravel filter which can be integrated into the landscape around the toilets. This ensures zero release of untreated waste into the environment and provides safe sanitation with minimal water use.

For behavioral change to be permanent and sustainable, training and motivation are key. Sanitation First ensures personal and menstrual hygiene education are imparted to its communities on a regular basis, apart from conducting periodic refreshers and train the trainer programmes for community organisers and non-profit partners. Apart from this, Sanitation First also provide EcoSan sanitation system training, masonry training for non-sewered sanitation and training in processing and marketing of nutrient rich compost.
Hygiene Education

Sanitation First has been investing in continuous R & D on its technology, latest innovations and developments in the field of sustainable non-sewered sanitation, use of less water for irrigation by applying ecosan resources, addressing high evidence of chemicals in water, such as fluoride, sustainably using blending technology, and revival of abandoned water sources through groundwater recharging.
